This summer, there is something for everyone when it comes to box-office buzz.
The science-fiction fans? Star Trek gets them going.
The teenage girls? 1D3D is much anticipated.
The fashion crowd? Ah yes…The Great Gatsby.
I haven’t seen it yet, but want to. I love 20s fashion and I love Baz Luhrmann, so it’s pretty much a no brainer.
However…as the excitement around the movie’s release started to build, I wasn’t looking up 20s inspired makeup and hair tutorials, or planning a girls’ night out at the cinema, or even listening to the soundtrack.
I’m far more old school: I got out my copy of The Great Gatsby. And re-read it.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece was on my reading list a few years ago, and had since been sitting in my library, near forgotten. As the genius of the films’ production and design was being lauded, I wanted to spend some time with the Nick, Daisy, Tom and Jay, and see what Fitzgerald’s genius had created.
As I read the book (a lot slimmer than I’d remembered it…) I was struck by the fact that I connected with the characters, but also that I felt a pull towards Fitzgerald himself. The movie I was left thinking about wasn’t Luhrmann’s…but Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. I wanted to be in Paris with Fitzgerald and Zelda! I wanted to see what this jazz age was all about while picking the brain of the author.
Has reading The Great Gatsby made me any more or less excited to see the film? Not really. But I’m now quite curious to see how some of the scenes that I found most beautiful or memorable are interpreted in wild technicolor.

Have you seen the film? Read the book? Gone dancing with Zelda?
